Brooke, practicing her Double Unders and I totally tricked her into a photo!
MEMBER OF THE MONTH: BROOKE
Brooke was nominated as member of the month because of her consistency in the gym and dedication to improving herself! It never goes unnoticed!
1. How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I have been doing CrossFit for about two years. I started working out with Mike at his unit on the weekends. However, those work outs were me doing what I 'thought' I could and trying to figure out ways to get out of doing the hard stuff. As you might imagine Mike grew annoyed with me but as I gained strength I grew to really like it, and when Mike deployed he suggested I find a CrossFit gym to keep up the momentum while he was gone. I've been at Crossfit Unrivaled since last March.

2. What keeps you motivated?
Just being at the gym with such a ridiculously awesome, strong group of people keeps me motivated. I come in some days and just watch others in complete awe. I always know, even on days I don’t feel like working out because the work day has been so hectic, I just go, and the moment I walk in I feel the energy from the other members and I never regret it.

Another motivation for me is the results I have seen in a matter of months. The first six months of starting at CrossFit Unrivaled I was really skittish and insecure about what I could or couldn’t do. I was annoyed that I didn’t see the results that I wanted. But, I was so afraid to fail in front of others that I didn’t even try to push myself. I realized the more I pushed and the more I took in what the coaches told me all along about 'how I could do it,' I saw what I was truly capable of. In the second six months, with eating paleo and working out consistently I got closer to where I wanted to be.
My husband is also a huge motivation for me. Mike loves to work out and push himself. I now realize he wasn’t being a jerk all those times when he encouraged or pushed me to try harder (LOL). He was trying to get me to see how awesome it feels to meet a goal and test your body’s limits. I think sometimes when he is so proud of me for a simple pullup or how heavy of weight I lifted it makes me feel even better about myself. It’s really heartwarming to know someone believes in you so much.
3. Favorite workout?
I love any workout that is done for time or has pull ups, cleans or handstand pushups. However, I never EVER check the workout before class. If I checked I would totally always ditch.

4. What are you goals?
My goals are to become more dedicated to Paleo, do rope climbs in an actual workout, improve my weight and technique on overhead squats and let go of some of the fear of failure. I have found half of the battle in doing CrossFit is totally mental. My mind talks me out of a lot of things that I have found were just thoughts and that my body can do a whole lot more than I felt was capable.

5. How has CrossFit changed your life?
Where do I begin with answering this question? It has changed me both mentally and physically.
It has altered my entire outlook on what is healthy and looks good. When I started CrossFit all of my girlfriends either scoffed or told me they would never do it because they would get bulky. I know everyone has heard this one and I have seen plenty of hot chicks who CrossFit that don’t look bulky. Now, I would take strong and fit over bone skinny any day. I also have to keep telling myself despite what I weigh, I feel more amazing than ever. The scale is a liar compared to what true health feels like.

I have also learned how to be more positive about myself and what I can do. The coaches and members at CrossFit are some of the most encouraging people I have ever met. It’s bizarre that it took people who used to be complete strangers, now coaches/friends, to believe in me and make me believe in myself.
6. If you could create one meal/food to be Paleo what would it be?
I have two foods that I wish would be Paleo, one would be jelly beans the other would be cheese. Up until the Lurong Paleo Challenge, I was obsessed with cheese and known as the dairy queen by my friends and family. I felt the more cheese the better. I had a full on temper tantrum when I wanted to cheat during the Lurong Challenge with some cheese cubes. I miss it but I feel totally different, in a good way, not having it.

7. If you had a CrossFit superpower what would it be?
I would want to do just one muscle up. I have the vision of trying to do one and just getting totally tangled in the rings.
OH-I would also want to beat Mike at a workout that involved running. (HA never going to happen)
